Bhagalpur has been producing extraordinary silk for over two centuries. Nestled on the southern shores of the Ganga in Bihar, this ancient city — once the Kingdom of Anga, mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata — is home to one of India's most distinctive textile traditions.
The Tussar silkworm (Antheraea mylitta), fed on wild Arjun and Asan trees, produces a thread unlike any other: naturally golden, textured, warm, and breathable. In 2013, the Government of India granted Bhagalpur silk its Geographical Indication (GI) tag — a recognition that this textile can only be called authentic if it originates from this very soil.
